Mr. Elbert Lee Smith was born in Hallsville, Texas to Mrs. Pearline Maxey Smith on December 16, 1930. His father, Mr. Fred Jones and stepfather, Mr. Willie Smith both preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by two daughters, Shirley and Belinda; three brothers: Eddie Jones, Charles (C. D.) Jones, and Bennie Walker; and one sister, Celia Smith Lewis.

Elbert attended public school in Hallsville. He later moved to Dallas where he worked 30 years for Red Ball Motor Freight before retiring later from Arkansas Freight. He then moved back to Hallsville in the late 90's where he and Bernice, the love of his life for 57 years, made their home. Elbert passed away quietly at his home on Friday, September 19, 2008.

Elbert united with the Golden Hill Baptist Church, Hallsville, Texas at an early age. After moving to Dallas he united with the Goodwill Baptist Church and then Griggs Chapel Baptist Church where he served faithfully for a number of years before returning back to Hallsville to live.

He leaves to cherish his memory a devoted wife, Bernice Smith; a son, Elton Smith, a daughter-in-law, Cassandra Smith; three grandchildren; his mother, Pearline Smith; 9 sisters: Mary Inez Smith, Cora Daniels, Corene Smith, Alice Key, Pearlie Wiley, Willie Wade, Essie O'Quinn, Savalia Brazzle, and Lovie Jones; 9 brothers: Fred Jones, Jr., Alvernon Jones, Lonnie Smith, James Smith, John Smith, Vandell Smith, Henry Smith, Franklin Smith, and Roger Smith; and a host of other relatives, former co-workers, and friends.
