Obituary

Funeral Service for Dr.Lorene Barnes Holmes will be 11:a.m.Saturday,April 21,2012,at Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins,Texas.
Dr.Lorene Barnes Holmes,daughter of the late Jesse Mae and William Henry Barnes was born July 27,1937 in Hainesville,Texas.
She grauated from Fouke-Hawkins Colored High School(Valedictorian)in 1955.She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Education from Jarvis Christian College(Magna Cum Laude)1959 and her Masters Business Education(1966)and Doctor of Education(1970)from North Texas State University(now the University of North Texas).
She married the late Charles Murphy Holmes,Sr.of Clarksville,Texas in 1960.To this union,three children were born;two sons,Charles Jr. and James,and one daughter,Jessyca.
She was a faithful officer and member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church,Hawkins,Texas for more than 40 years.She was a Certified Lay Speaker for the Tyler District,United Methodist Church.
Dr.Holmes spent her forty-nine years professional career at Jarvis Chistian College with many distinguished honors.Some that are most noteworthy include:Distinguished Alumni Award 2012,in celebration of Jarvis 100 year anniversary;Professor Emerita;Dr.Lorene B.Holmes Endowed Scholarship established;Induction into Inaugural Class of Pioneer Hall of Fame(1994);Honored by Dallas Alumni Chapter,Heritage Award Recipient;Honored by Alabama Area Alumni Association at Theodore(Ted)Hawkins Scholarship Banquet;Honored by Edwards Ministerial Alliance for Lifetime Achievement Award;Lifetime Member of Jarvis Christian College/Southern Christian Institute Association National Alumni Association;Outstanding Alumni Award from National Alumni Association and Hawkins/Jarvis Chapter.
She also had many accomplishments that were notable as well.As an avid reader and educator,she was compelled to share her knowledge and expertise in many forums for which she received recognition.She was compelled to share her knowledge and expertise in many forums for which she received recognition.She published 15 articles,8 chapters in yearbooks,3 case studies in textbooks and an editorial reviewer for three textbooks.She was a member of the Visiting Committee for Southern Association of Colleges and Schools(11 colleges and universities).Responsible for bringing outstanding executives,Federal officials,school and college professionals,business,industry,politicians,TV stars to the Jarvis Campus and raised millions of dollars in cash,and/or in kind donations.She was the District 8 "Business Teacher of the Year"five times;State "Business Teacher of the Year"First Faculty Representative to the Jarvis Christian College Board of Trustees;"T.A. Abbott Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award"(first Black,first female,first Jarvis Alumni,first faculty member,first non-member of the Christian Church(Disciples of Christ);Elected to Hawkins Board of Trustees(officer and first female elected);One of eight persons from East Texas honored by KLTV as "Proud of East Texas";Charter Member,Delta Mu Delta;Charter Member,
She also had a number of affilications to which she was committed as well,including Rose City chapter of top ladies of Distinction(officer and "National Top Lady of the Year);Golden Life Member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,Inc.;Southwest General Educator of the Year for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,Inc.Charter member,Delta Mu Delta;Life Member,Delta Pi Epsilon and a member of Citizens for Community Improvement.She received a Special Recognition Award from National Urban League's Black Executive Exchange Program;Listed in United Negro College Fund Annual Report for faculty who teach at UNCF College and Universities and many others too numerous to mention.
She was a deciated educator,a loving wife,devoted mother,grandmother and an inspiration to all she met.She departed this life on April 12,2012.
She is survived by her children,Charles Murphy(Sandra)Holmes,Jr.Longview,Texas;James Henry(Regina)Holmes,Sugar Land,Texas;Jessyca Yvette(Glenn)Holmes Caldwell,Forney,Texas;Stepson Reginald Payton,Oxnard,California.
