The Reverend Robert Earl Jones, Sr.'s Obituary
Services for the Rev. Robert Earl Jones, Sr., late pastor of the Greater Mt. Gideon Baptist Church, will be held Friday, July 7, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. from the Greater Mt. Gideon Baptist Church. Rev. O. B. Winkley, Pastor of the Antioch Baptist Church, Houston, Texas will deliver the eulogy. Burial, Kilgore City Cemetery.
The Reverend Robert E. Jones, Sr., was born September 9, 1952, in Kilgore, Texas to Mr. Leroy and Mrs. Ruby Jones. Their union was blessed with three children, two brothers and his parents preceded him in death.
On the third day of July 2006, surrounded by his loving wife and family, Robert was called to active duty reporting to God.
Rev. Jones received his education in the Kilgore Independent School District in Kilgore, Texas.
As a result of their love, Rev. Jones united in marriage to Rachel Bethea on September 30, 1995.
Having been in God's plan, Rev. Jones began preaching at the age of 12. He preached his first sermon on August 19, 1964 at the Post Oak CME Church in Easton, Texas. Several years ago during the celebration of Pastor Jones' birthday at Greater Mt. Gideon, his wife Rachel presented him with a plaque in honor of his Ministry, entitled: "Let Your Light Shine."
Having been blessed musically, Rev. Jones sang and directed in many gospel groups in the area: The Prophets, The Templetons, The Mighty Echoes, the Interdenominational Choir, the Voices of Victory and the Robert Earl Jones Choir.
The Gospel Preacher pastored numerous churches: Bible Way, Mt. Pleasant, TX; Hebron, Glade Springs, and New Hope Baptist Churches in Henderson, TX; New Home Baptist Church; Mason Springs Baptist Church, Longview, TX. In July 1994, Reverend Jones became the pastor of the Greater Mt. Gideon Baptist Church in Longview, TX where he served until God called his solider home. He preached his last sermon on Sunday, June 11, 2006.
He leaves many loving memories to be cherished by his loving and devoted wife, Rachel; five children, Teresa of Dallas, TX, Robert Jr., James, Angela and Yolanda all of Longview, TX; 16 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; mother-in-law, Mae Bell Daniels; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and The Greater Mt. Gideon Church Family.
